PARKS AND GARDENS – LISE CARSWELL
Valerie Benson resigned the position and Lise Carswell has taken it up in the interim.

A very productive meeting was held with the Garden Reps where discussions were had regarding protocol, gardening spend and council

Raincoats purchased for Staffa’s team

Cutting back a 1.5 meter firebreak/security break at Geneva Drive has started and approximately half of the work has been done. We had to break for the rain, but will get back to it once the weather improves

Work is underway in Baalen Close in Uitsig for a community garden. The Marina gardeners have helped dig up the bed and the residents have got together to source plants, water and compost. Residents will have a planting day on Saturday.

Flower beds in Canon Island, Park Island security hut and the bridge between Park Island and Eastlake have been upgraded and improved

Thank you to Cherry and Pam for donating the off cuts from the fig plants for use in Marina da Gama

There was some vandalism in Uitsig Park. The bin contents were strewn across the park and the well-point was switched on and left to run. Residents reported the problem and we were assisted by Errol and Sharon Gunn and given a lesson in how the well-point works. It is in good working order and Errol has offered to fix a small fault so that the system is ready for the summer months

STANDARDS

13 new infringements in progress, none finalised

COMMUNICATIONS – PATRICK McKENNA

We are now emerging from the intensive workload associated with the AGM to re-focus on our core communication channels: the weekly newsletter, blog, Facebook page and website. The focus will be on updating the website to include our two new members, Tharwah and Nick, and originating fresh new content for the other channels. After a rather long delay, we need to discuss and vote on options for monetizing our channels. My first suggestion is to appoint 5 Star Stories to explore our options. Another project involves updating our welcome pack for new homeowners and tenants – as well as existing residents who still need guidance on the Marina’s regulations. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you would like us to write up any reports on your portfolio.

How ExCom is working to protect your safety

With safety and security top of everyone’s mind, we thought this would be a good time to update you on how we’re investing your levy payments and our resources into combatting crime.

– The latest stats show that Uitsig Peninsula suffers the most crime. With this in mind, we are currently putting new cameras on the North wall to monitor the road reserve. Installation will be finalised in the next week or two.

– Two new cameras will also be going up on the Geneva Drive road reserve to help protect the back of Battleridge. This is the last section of Marina da Gama without camera protection. We now feel confident that our suburb is fully covered from a security point of view.

– ExCom has already put up cameras on all entrances to Marina da Gama. These cameras incorporate licence plate recognition (LPR) technology, which sends Deep Blue immediate alerts when a flagged vehicle enters the Marina. A few months ago, we changed our LPR service provider and we are now contracted to Navic. This has seen an enormous increase in the alerts we receive and follow up on.

– Your ExCom has very regular meetings with the SAPS, Law Enforcement and Deep Blue to build strong relationships and to access up-to-date information about what is happening in our suburb as well as our neighbouring areas.

– The relationship between Deep Blue, Combat Force and Marina da Gama is very strong. We are in constant contact with them through a WhatsApp group. We rely heavily on our security service providers to keep us updated – and safe.

– The MDGA ExCom and the security clusters from each island meet regularly to discuss the various security measures taken in different sections of Marina da Gama and to share ideas and information.

Tributes for the Marina’s original landscaper

We recently learned about the passing of Gordon Smith, the man responsible for designing the Marina’s landscape. Born in 1934, Gordon – who qualified as a horticulturalist at Kew
Gardens – was widely respected as a pioneering force in South Africa’s landscaping industry.

Among many other firsts, he was a founding member of the South African Landscapers
Institute (SALI), which published this inspiring tribute to a fellow professional it describes as a ‘legend.’

Gordon was offered the position of landscape manger with Anglo American in 1970 and
moved his young family to the Cape. As part of the Anglo American team, Gordon travelled the world for this project, visiting a number of residential marina projects as they worked out how best to design and build the Marina Da Gama housing development in Muizenberg, Cape Town.

Over the next few years, Gordon was to become an expert in marina landscape construction, developing windbreaks and landscaping in a marina development. “It was a very exciting time,” he remembered on many occasions. He was on the team that broke ground, started the initial earthwork preparation and construction of the Marina De Gama Village set on and in the sandvlei wetlands of the southern Cape peninsula.

Gordon constructed and developed a site nursery where he propagated and supplied all the
plants and trees to later be used in the landscaping development of Marina da Gama. He
also oversaw the construction and windbreak planting on huge sand bank berm barriers.

The berms acted as giant windbreak barriers to protect the proposed Marina da Gama
development from the infamous south-easter winds which lashed the coast line from Sunset Beach to Muizenburg.

After the completion of the Marina de Gama project, Gordon returned to Johannesburg in
the mid-1970s. He broke away from the Anglo American Group to open his own landscaping construction business.

Our condolences to Gordon’s family and friends.

In his honour, we’re pleased to bring you an archive copy of the Marina’s original
development plan
. You can also read SALI’s tribute here.

Sick of litter? Be like Ross!

Many thanks to Jill and Andy Rumbelow for introducing us to their community-minded
grandson, Ross De Villiers, who recently set a great example to all residents by launching his own anti-litter campaign.

As Andy explains: “The very heavy rains that fell on 8 July brought masses of litter from the rivers feeding Zandvlei into the Marina’s canals. Ross offered to go on a one-lad clean-up, and set off with a net and two litter bags – and filled both of them.”

Ross, aged seven, is a Grade 1 pupil at Bergvliet Primary School. This isn’t the first time he has made a difference in the Marina through his own litter-busting efforts. “We’re very
proud grandparents,” says Andy.

Good on you, Ross!

Meet your Uitsig Peninsula garden reps

Tina Roberts, her partner Carlo Bidoli and her family moved to Uitsig four years ago and they love living in the Marina. Tina retired at the age 55 years after 30 years of buying and selling property. Her passion is renovating property, which she still does. She turned her current home from The Wreck to her dream house – and visitors confirm that it truly is. Tina also volunteers for Chic Mamas in Wynberg, an upmarket second-hand clothing boutique that supports our neighbours in Vrygrond and surrounding areas with prior learning development.

Tina approached MDGA ExCom earlier this year with the idea of transforming the open
public space at the corner of Eastlake Drive and Baalen Close into a communal garden area with the help of nearby neighbours and the Marina Gardeners. The Marina Gardeners dug the area while Uitsig residents contributed plants, a boat and their labour to transform the area.

Due to its sheer size, UItsig has a second gardening representative: Koemi Rowe. She moved to Uitsig Peninsula in 2012 with her husband Matt, and son Jake.

Koemi and her business partner own Nordic Travel, an inbound southern Africa tour operator that offers tours to Norwegians. Koemi also has a passion for gardening and growing plants and has several on offer to local gardeners. Her garden is a real kaleidoscope of colours, textures and fragrances and offers a sublime retreat from the real world. She is a keen cook and baker and supported the Marina Cooking group with meals for Vrygrond last year.

The Marina Gardeners work every Tuesday in a different part of the Marina so, every third Tuesday, they will be in Uitsig Peninsula with Tina and Koemi.

If you have any plants you wish to donate, if you can help with watering flower beds, or wish to raise concern about one of the public open spaces in Uitsig Peninsula, please feel free to contact Tina on 082 377 8397 or Koemi on 076 768 9135 or email the Marina da Gama Association on marinadagama@iafrica.com.

Please remember that verges are the resident’s responsibility.
